Approaches to Writing - Phase 2: Topic to Question

You have decided on a topic for your argumentative research paper. Now it's time to come up with some questions you want to ask about your topic. Why? Because asking questions about your topic will make sure you stay interested in your topic. You will be able to choose only those aspects of your topic you find intriguing. Eventually, you will select just one question to build your paper around.

There's another reason to come up with a question for your research paper. It will help you to narrow your focus. That's good, because the narrower your focus gets on the Main Journey of writing a research paper, the less time you will waste looking for sources that really don't pertain to your paper. By narrowing your topic into a question, you won't be tempted to read every book or article ever written on the topic. You will also be plunging ahead into the most exciting part of research . . . asking a question that burns inside you and simply ACHES to be answered!

So buckle your seatbelt! Begin by learning more about what a question is.
