- Subjects are generally expressed as a single word (such
as "Computers") or a couple of words at most (such as "United States
Immigration").
- Although lists may be written in either horizontal or
vertical formats, vertical format is more readable for longer lists.
- Lists may be numbered (as this list) or bulleted.
- All items on a list should be consistently capitalized.
Capitalize first letters of all words, or just first letters of first
words, or use all lowercase letters. The secret is to be consistent!
(Of course, proper nouns should always be capitalized; see pp. 73-75 in
the MLA Handbook.)
- All items on a list should be consistently punctuated
(after each item, use a period, a semicolon, or preferably no punctuation
at all).
