- Items on a Works Cited page are not numbered. Rather,
they should be listed alphabetically.
- On a Works Cited page, remember to abbreviate months of
the year, names of states, and certain other publishing terms according to
MLA guidelines (see Chapter 6 in the MLA Handbook for Writers of
Research Papers).
- Book entries do not need page numbers, since you are
citing the entire book as your source. Add page numbers for a book entry
only when you are
citing a single chapter of a book. You would do this when your book
contains chapters written by different authors (see pp. 126 - 30 in the
MLA
Handbook for Writers of Research Papers).
- Books containing chapters by different authors often have
been edited. Include the editor's name following the book title (see pp.
134 - 35 in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Reseach Papers.)
- Please italicize rather than
underline all book titles and any other titles that are underlined in the
MLA Handbook. In the old days when students used typewriters, underlining
was necessary to indicate titles. However, since you are using word processing
software on a computer
and have the capability to italicize titles of long works (as publishers
would do), please use italics! The MLA Handbook recognizes that professors
may have preferences for italics over underlining (see p. 65).
-
No matter how a book title is capitalized on the book cover or title page of
the book itself, use MLA guidelines for capitalizing titles, found on pp.
73-75 of the MLA Handbook. NOTE: According to MLA, only important
words are capitalized in a title!
