- Be sure to distinguish whether your article comes from a newspaper, a
magazine, or a journal. Because these publications are somewhat different in
the kind of material they contain, MLA citation format differs slightly for
each. For instance, an MLA Works Cited entry for a newspaper or magazine
requires a date while the entry for a journal may require only a volume
number, or a volume number and a date (depending on what type of journal it
is!).
-
Be sure to distinguish whether your article comes from a hard-copy version
of the periodical, an online periodical Web site, or an online full-text
article database (review pages in Phase 2 beginning with
"MLA Works Cited:
Articles")
-
In citing journals, be sure to distinguish whether your journal numbers the
pages of each issue separately or all issues continuously from
January through December of a given year. MLA has different formats for
each (see pp. 150-51).
