Approaches to Writing
What is a topic? A topic is a narrowed aspect of a subject. It also reflects your particular interest in the subject. For example, consider Ryan's subject "mountain climbing." As we have mentioned, hundreds of research papers could be writen on that subject alone! Possible topics include "hazards of mountin climbing" . . . or "women mountain climbers" . . . or "amateur mountain climbing on Mt. Everest." Each of these topics might have led Ryan to a viable research paper. Yet, by choosing just one topic, Ryan did not have to read everything ever written on the subject of "mountain climbing." Think of the hours in the library Ryan saved! You will too, once you narrow your subject into a topic.
