Approaches to Writing
Assignment 1B - List of Potential Topics
Helpful Hints
  1. Lists are generally presented in vertical format and consistently capitalized and punctuated (see "Helpful Hints" for Assignment 1A for more details).

  2. A topic is expressed as a short phrase that will include more words than a subject includes. (For example: the topic "influence of California anti-immigration laws on Asian immigrants" is longer than the subject "immigration.")

  3. A topic is NOT expressed as a complete sentence.

  4. A topic is NOT expressed as a question. Reword a question as a topic. (For example: "Why do people join the Ku Klux Klan?" becomes simply "Reasons people join the Ku Klux Klan.")

  5. All topics on the List of Potential Topics need to DIRECTLY relate to your chosen subject. The best way to insure this is to repeat the language of your subject in each topic. (For example: for the subject "Gun control," do not write just "California." Write "Gun control in California.")
