Approaches to Writing - Assignment 5A - Paper: First Version
Assignment 5A - Paper: First Version
(Estimated Completion Time: 3-5 hours)
What is the assignment?

Write the first version of your argumentative research paper, based on the Thesis Statement you submitted for Assignment 3B and the List of Main Points you submitted for Assignment 4A. Your paper should have a recognizable beginning, middle, and end.

Make sure your paper contains the following sections:

  • Introduction Paragraph, announcing your thesis statement and main points

  • Main Point # 1/Subpoint # 1 Paragraph
  • Main Point # 1/Subpoint # 2 Paragraph
  • Main Point # 1/Subpoint # 3 Paragraph (if you have one)
  • Main Point # 1/Subpoint # 4 Paragraph (if you have one)

  • Main Point # 2/Subpoint # 1 Paragraph
  • Main Point # 2/Subpoint # 2 Paragraph
  • Main Point # 2/Subpoint # 3 Paragraph (if you have one)
  • Main Point # 2/Subpoint # 4 Paragraph (if you have one)

  • Main Point # 3/Subpoint # 1 Paragraph
  • Main Point # 3/Subpoint # 2 Paragraph
  • Main Point # 3/Subpoint # 3 Paragraph (if you have one)
  • Main Point # 3/Subpoint # 4 Paragraph (if you have one)

  • Conclusion Paragraph, including a restatement of your thesis and main points

  • Works Cited page, with corresponding parenthetical references in the text of the paper

Depending on how many subpoints you have for each main point, you will end up with a research paper that contains eight to fourteen paragraphs.

Remember: you already wrote nearly one-third of this paper when you developed on of your main points with subpoints and evidence (Assignment 4C). Based on feedback from Kenn on Assignment 4C, make changes to Assignment 4C and incorporate the paragraphs into the first version of your paper.

Even though the final version of your research paper will be 8 - 10 pages long, your first version will probably be only 5 - 6 pages, including the Works Cited page. It is understood that your paper will be further developed in subsequent versions. NOTE: There is no maximum page limit on your first version.

When is it due? See the Calendar for the due date.
How do I submit the assignment?

Submit your Paper: First Version to Kenn via WebCT e-mail, as an attachment (see "Submitting/Reading an Attachment" for instructions on how to submit assignments via e-mail). Use MLA paper format for your submission (standard margins, header, etc.) and give your paper a title that reflects your tentative thesis statement (for example: No Tolerance for Gangs: Parents Who Care--First Version). Also submit your paper to your designated writing partner.

Example of an argumentative research paper (final version) "Guided into a Disaster," by Ryan Primosch.
