Side Trip Assignment 1A
Side Trip Assignment 1A - Summary Report
(Estimated Completion Time: 2 - 4 hours)

What is the assignment? Read the four articles you located for Assignment 2C. Your assignment is to write a report that summarizes the viewpoints expressed in those four articles.

In your report, write at least one paragraph summarizing each article. Do NOT quote directly from the articles; rather, put the author's ideas in your own words. Also write an introduction paragraph that announces your purpose in writing this report and a conclusion paragraph that briefly restates each article's viewpoint. (That makes six paragraphs total.)

Remember, the objective of this assignment is to summarize what OTHER people believe. Resist putting in your own "two cents" (you will do that later in your argumentative research paper). Direct your report to college-level readers who know very little about your Question and would like to learn the viewpoints of others (see below for suggestions on how to structure your informative report.)

Include a Works Cited page as the last page of your report. NOTE: This will be the same Works Cited page you submitted for Assignment 2C, plus any corrections suggested in Kenn's feedback.

Before submitting your paper, be sure to proofread your report for grammar, punctuation, spelling, word choice, and other possible language or mechanical errors.

How do I submit the assignment? Submit Side Trip Assignment 1A to Kenn via WebCT e-mail, as an attachment (see "Submitting/Reading an Attachment" for instructions on how to submit assignments via e-mail). Use MLA paper format for your submission (standard margins, header, etc.) and give your report a title that reflects your purpose in writing (for example, Summary of Viewpoints Related to Amateur Mountain Climbers Being Banned from Mt. Everest).

How do I structure my summary report?
Introduction Paragraph Clearly state your Research Paper Question and announce your purpose in writing this summary report (to inform your readers about the viewpoints of four authors who represent different positions related to your Research Paper Question). Be sure to state your Research Paper Question in full. NOTE: Do NOT state your own viewpoint.
Paragraph Two Summarize the viewpoint of an author. Summarize ONLY the author's thesis and main points--not the details of the article.
Paragraph Three Summarize the viewpoint of an author. Summarize ONLY the author's thesis and main points--not the details of the article.
Paragraph Four Summarize the viewpoint of an author. Summarize ONLY the author's thesis and main points--not the details of the article.
Paragraph Five Summarize the viewpoint of an author. Summarize ONLY the author's thesis and main points--not the details of the article.
Conclusion Paragraph Review all four authors and briefly restate each author's viewpoint. Identify similarities and differences among the authors' viewpoints. Remember: Do NOT state your own viewpoint.
