Approaches to Writing
Course Description/Goals
From "Course Outline," Rio Hondo College Department of Communications & Languages

This is a composition course which enables students to compose logical, coherent essays and reports necessary to college success. Students will master research techniques, learn critical reading and thinking skills through expository and persuasive reading selections, and apply these skills in creating original essays, leading to a research paper. As a result of taking this course, the students will:
  • Understand the relationship between clear, logical thinking and the composition of clear, logical essays.
  • Appreciate the importance of writers being able to adapt their writing to fit the norms and expectations of various audiences.
  • Comprehend the need for evidence, examples, and explanation in making writing concrete, relevant, and credible.
  • Perceive the relationship between reading different points of view about a topic, analyzing these points of view, and then developing an original thesis statement which can be supported by logical arguments and researched evidence.
  • Distinguish between exposition and persuasion.
  • Use critical thinking processes to clearly and logically explain and/or defend points of view.
