Approaches to Writing
Course Policies

Assignment Submissions
English 101 is comprised of a sequence of 18 assignments, ranging in length from a few words to a few pages each. All assignments lead to a polished, 8 - 10 page research paper on a topic of your choice. You must satisfactorily complete all 18 assignments to receive credit for English 101. The assignments are outgrowths of the course lessons, which have been divided into a "Main Journey" of writing an argumentative research paper and three "Side Trips" into related areas of writing. Detailed instructions for completing each assignment are provided on the course assignments pages (See "Assignment Log")
Late Submissions
Online courses are designed to facilitate learning at an individual pace. However, to allow for timely completion of the course all assignments must be submitted electronically by the stated deadlines, or earlier (See "Calendar"). Late submissions will be considered only if you have contacted Kenn (by e-mail or phone) regarding an illness or emergency prior to the stated deadline regarding an illness or emergency. Late submissions will receive no written comments, only a score.
Attendance
Conventional attendance policies are not applicable to online courses such as English 101. However, you are required to participate in the course by completing the sequence of 18 assignments, contributing to the Course Chat Rooms, conducting at least four conferences in the Online Writing Center, posting to the Online Student Portfolio, participating with a writing partner, and staying in regular contact with Kenn via e-mail. Please notify Kenn via e-mail or phone regarding illnesses, out-of-state travel, or work-related matters that may cause prolonged "absences" from your regular course participation.
Plagiarism/Academic Integrity
English 101 will abide by the policy on "Academic Integrity" formulated by the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees (No. 4201):
"Students are prohibited from resorting to unauthorized sources for information in fulfilling the requirements of a course. A student who cheats may be assigned an academic penalty grade at the discretion of the instructor of record. The penalty may range from lowering the student's grade to assigning a failing grade for the course, depending on the severity of the infraction. A penalized student will not be permitted to avoid the academic penalty grade by withdrawing form the course with a "W" grade without consent of the instructor of record . . . ."
Sexual Harassment
English 101 will abide by the Rio Hondo College policy on "Sexual Harassment" as outlined in the Rio Hondo College Student Handbook.
Student Rules of Conduct
English 101 will abide by the "Rules of Student Conduct" as outlined in the Rio Hondo College Student Handbook. In completing your on-line course activities and communicating with other course participants, pay special attention to Policy # 2:
"Rio Hondo guarantees also that students shall have the right to learn. Violence or threats of violence which deny that right to anyone cannot be tolerated. Neither will the college tolerate such obvious violations as disobedience, dishonesty, falsification of college records or unauthorized use or entry to college property."
