Assignment 5C - Argumentative Research Paper: First Version
(Estimated Completion Time: 3 - 5 hours)
What is the assignment? Review the pages "Paper: First Version." and "Visualizing the Hierarchy of Argument." Then, write the first version of your argumentative research paper, paying particular attention to the following:

  • The first version of your research paper should have a recognizable beginning, middle, and end.

  • Writing the first version of an argumentative paper is a matter of:

    • declaring your thesis statement--usually at the beginning of the paper;

    • providing several reasons, or main points, that explain why or how your thesis statement is true;

    • developing several subpoints that elaborate on each of your main points;

    • supporting each of your subpoints with evidence gathered from research and/or logical explanations

    NOTE: Your thesis statement should be the same Research Paper Tentative Thesis Statement you submitted as Assignment 4B, and your main points should include the three main points on your List of Main Points submitted as Assignment 5A.

  • Your first version should include a Works Cited page of all sources cited in parenthetical references within your text.

  • Even though the final version of your research paper will be 8 - 10 pages long, your first version will probably be only 5 - 6 pages, including the Works Cited page. It is understood that your paper will be further developed in subsequent versions. NOTE: There is no maximum page limit on your first version.
How do I submit the assignment? Submit your Paper: First Version to Kenn via e-mail, as an attachment (see "Submitting/Reading an Attachment" for instructions on how to submit assignments via e-mail). Use MLA paper format for your submission (standard margins, header, etc.) and give your paper a title that reflects your tentative thesis statement (for example: No Tolerance for Gangs: Parents Who Care--First Version).

Also submit your paper to your other writing partner.

When is it due? See the Calendar for the due date.
